5 Signs Your Business Website Needs a Redesign

· 5 min

A website redesign is worth it when the current site is actively costing you business — not just because it feels old. Here are the five signs that mean it's genuinely time, and a quick way to tell whether you need a light refresh or a full rebuild.

1. It doesn't bring in leads

This is the one that matters most. If your site gets visitors but produces few or no enquiries, it's not doing its job. A site is a salesperson, not a brochure — if it isn't generating leads, the design, copy, or structure is working against you. (We broke down the most common reasons here.)

2. It looks dated next to competitors

Open your site in one tab and your three best competitors in others. If yours looks noticeably older — clunky layout, small text, heavy clutter — visitors notice too, and it quietly erodes trust before anyone reads a word. First impressions form in well under a second.

3. It's frustrating on a phone

Most of your traffic is on mobile. If you have to pinch and zoom, buttons are hard to tap, or the layout breaks on a phone, you're losing the majority of your visitors. A site that was "responsive enough" five years ago often isn't anymore.

4. It's slow

If your homepage takes more than three seconds to load, a big chunk of visitors leave before they see it. Old page-builder sites accumulate bloat over time and get slower. Speed is also a Google ranking factor, so a slow site loses you traffic and conversions.

5. You can't update it yourself

If changing a price or adding a service means emailing a developer and waiting a week, your site has become a bottleneck. A modern build lets you make routine edits yourself, so the site keeps up with your business instead of holding it back.

Refresh or rebuild?

Not every problem needs a full rebuild:

  • A refresh (new look, updated copy, on the same foundation) makes sense when the structure is sound and you mostly need it to look current and load faster.
  • A rebuild makes sense when the site is slow, hard to maintain, not converting, and dated — at that point patching costs more than starting clean on a modern foundation.

If you're hitting three or more of the five signs above, you're usually in rebuild territory.

The bottom line

Redesign when the site is costing you leads, trust, or time — not just because of its age. Be honest about which of the five signs apply to you, and whether a refresh will fix them or just delay a rebuild.
